Giro 2019 – Coast to Coast Tour

Join Mummu Cycling on a coast to coast adventure across Italy. Hosted by Australian dual Giro d’Italia Stage winner Matthew Goss, you’ll join the Tifosi and see six stages of the 2019 Giro LIVE including stage starts, stage finishes and Individual Time Trial.

Starting on Italy’s beautiful Tirreno Coastline and finishing on the Adriatic Coast this tour will take in the beauty of Tuscany, Lazio, Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna and San Marino. Tuscany will see us cycling through rolling hills dotted with vineyards and visiting the famous walled town of Lucca, home to many cyclists in the Pro peloton. In the Lazio region vines switch to olive groves so the scenery is different but equalling stunning, and with Sabina Olive Oil ranked one of the best in the world look forward to tasting the local food. It is also home to the challenging Monte Terminillo, featured several times in previous races, which will become an instant highlight once you’ve ridden it. Emilia-Romagna brings us to the east coast and some flattish roads. It is also the starting point for the ITT which finishes up the hill in San Marino, an independent republic – you can get views for miles, a passport stamp but with no visa needed!  Whether it’s enjoying the rolling hills of Tuscany, tasting local delicacies, be it food or wine, or riding the ITT stage hours before the pros, this tour has it all.

If you love all things cycling but don’t ride, then you can enjoy private tours of the best olive oil in the world, wine tastings, and incredible Italian feasts, all whilst you explore famous towns and experience prime roadside viewing of the exciting early stages of the 2019 Giro.

This morning our Mummu Cycling team will meet you in Florence to transfer you to our hotel.

Stage Depart

/ Distance 70km
GIRO Tappe 3 : VINCI – ORBETELLO

After a leisurely breakfast we roll out to soak up the atmosphere of the Stage 3 start in Vinci. You’ll see the ‘Sign On’ where all riders are presented on stage to an adoring crowd. With music pumping, local towns folk out in force and of course the Tifosi packing the area the atmosphere is huge! Take the opportunity to wander the nearby streets where the Pro team buses will be set up or  see riders sipping coffee at less obvious cafes.

Once the peloton roll off the start line we too get on the bike and ride to the stunning walled city of Lucca to enjoy lunch. With the surrounding area famous for Chianti, it would amiss to not sample one over lunch.  Lucca features an unusual bike path so we will also do a loop of the town on top of the walls surrounding the town for a different perspective. After lunch we ride back to our start point in Montecatini Terme where we’ll watch the stage finish, another one for the sprinters, on TV.

After an action packed day the evening will be at your leisure with some great restaurant choices within walking distance of our hotel.

Monte Terminillo

May 15, 2019 / Difficulty
/ Distance 85km
GIRO Tappe 5 : FRASCATI – TERRACINA

The race is heading away to the south of us for the next couple of days so with no race viewing its all about us and experiencing all the region has to offer. This morning after breakfast, well set off on a  85km loop north of Rieti and climb the famous Monte Terminillo.  The climb is 21.5 kms long. 1884 mts altitude with an average gradient of 6.3% and has featured in the several previous editions of the Giro D’Italia and Tirreno Adriatico races, one for the bucket-list! A scenic day on the bike for our first ride in the area.

As there’s no stage viewing dictating a schedule we can take our time on today’s ride so depending on our progress we’ll either join our spectator friends in Sabina or we’ll lunch locally in Rieti on our return.

After a long day riding tackling the Terminillo take this evening for some R&R. Tonight’s dinner will be at your leisure in Rieti, which has an abundance of restaurants to choose from.

After breakfast we will transfer to L’Aquila to start our ride leaving the town behind as there is better viewing on the slopes of La Svolte di Popilo at about the 35km to go mark. The climb can best be described as 7.5 kms of PAIN! and being steep gives us a chance to see the riders fight it out in relatively slow motion. Before we get there we’ll stop just nearby in Popili at a local winery for a tasting and bite to eat before today’s live race viewing.

After watching the race we will transfer back to our hotel where the evening will be yours to enjoy.

Stage Finish in San Marino

May 18, 2019 / Difficulty
/ Distance 65km
GIRO Tappe 8: TORTORETO LIDO – PESARO

This morning after breakfast and check out, we will transfer to Senigallia to start todays 65km ride, where led by Matt Goss we will intersect with the course, riding along the route to the stage finish. It is a slight downhill run to the finish so the sprinters will have massive gears on if there’s a tailwind forecast. Check your speed as we ride towards the finish line so you can compare with big hitters later in the day.

Stunning seaside vistas and will greet us today as a distinct contrast to the hilltop villages and green landscape we’ve been surrounded by until now. With the combination of beaches, deck chairs and hotels it will seem we have ridden to a completely different country, which by the time we get to our hotel for the next 2 nights, will be true.

Take a stroll along the promenade or have a ‘Spritz’ at a local bar whilst waiting for the riders to come flying into town for a guaranteed sprint finish. After the stage we head just up the hill to our accommodation in San Marino where tomorrow’s stage finishes.

This evening will be yours to explore the incredible republic of San Marino.

Stunning seaside vistas will greet us on our drive today as a distinct contrast to the hilltop villages and green landscape we’ve been surrounded by until now.

Take a stroll along the promenade or have a ‘Spritz’ at a local bar whilst waiting for the riders to come flying into town for a guaranteed sprint finish.

This evening will be yours to explore the incredible republic of San Marino. San Marino is the world’s oldest republic so technically we are not in Italy. The town is perched high above the coast so offers great views over the plains below all the to the coast. The locals suggest the San Marino number plate is the best to have as they never have to pay for parking fines accrued in Italy proper!

San Marino Time Trial

May 19, 2019 / Difficulty
/ Distance 80km
GIRO Tappe 9:  ITT  RICCIONE – SAN MARINO

This morning after breakfast, we’ll ride along the the Time Trial course to the start town of Riccione.

Gossy will guide us through the bus zone, where we will see the teams set up with their buses as a backdrop, each with areas cordoned off so that riders can warm up on the rollers before setting off on their own Time Trial against the clock. Riders start schedules will posted up on the buses so each rider knows when to get into their warm up prior to starting. Its a great day to get up close for photos of the riders as they warm up on the rollers.

Whilst riding along the TT course we’ll take note of the steeper sections because if we are not watching from our hotel on the course, these spots will make for better photos when race viewing later in the day.

This evening will be our final night group dinner where we will celebrate a wonderful cycling adventure, new friends and discoveries, although we are not quite finished with the experience as we still have tomorrow morning’s exciting pro team meet and greet.
