Get your Garmin’s ready and your Strava set as we head straight for the iconic Col de la Madeleine that will be your first real challenge along the route and far from an easy start. The ascent has made a real name for itself in Tour de France history, its relentless gradients proving quite the test – ‘beautiful, but heartbreaking’…even for the pros. Get your climbing legs out and your game face on, as you hit the slopes of the 25km giant, averaging a steady 6.2% for its entirety and topping out at 2000m!
From there, you’ll enjoy the thrill of the lengthy descent off the other side to follow, as we make our way to the next big hurdle of the day, the infamous Col du Glandon – another truly epic Alps climb, dubbed as one of the toughest there is in France, known for its leg-zapping slopes, matched with killer scenery and views.
You’ll travel 19.8km up from the Northern approach, that has an average gradient of 7.3% – its summit sitting sky-high at 1924m.
Atop, take a breather to replenish those efforts with some ride nutrition before making your way over to its neighbour, Col de la Croix de Fer. By now, the extra 2.5km to reach its peak will undeniably feel incredibly tedious. Persevere, as the panoramic views atop are well worth the extra effort!
