A Long Weekend in Girona guided by friends of the pro peloton

If you’re a cycling lover, surely you’ve heard of the now-mecca, Girona? The small city, located 100km North of Barcelona has become quite the pro cycling hub over the years. Its initial traction taking off back in the late 90’s when Lance Armstrong and the US postal team chose the charming Catalan city as their base. Since then, it’s only continued to increasingly grow and in recent years has become a very attractive cycling destination. Oozing culture, friendly locals and an incredible mix of traditional cuisine, paired with a growing number of ‘cycling inspired’ cafés and social hang-outs.

The most important factor drawing so many cycling enthusiasts and pros alike, is of course the outstanding cycling terrain, offering a ride for just about everyone. From climbing epic ascents on the border of the Pyrenees, to enjoying the undulating coastline of the visually stunning Costa Brava, or simply, keeping it local, with countless scenic rides along Girona’s surrounding roads. To top fantastic riding options, the sun is usually always beaming and rain is rare! A real cyclist’s dream…It’s no wonder why it’s become the hub it is today.

This November, we are thrilled to be running a Girona tour, supported by a current professional cyclist, with special guests from the pro peloton. What better way to see what all the Girona hype is all about than have a professional cyclist show you round their favourite training roads, cafés and restaurants? With now over 100 pro riders in town, let’s just say you’re guaranteed to spot a few out on the roads, and with your pro tour host, this will be inevitable!

Highlights Include:

  • Four days of riding, featuring ‘the best of Girona’
  • Two complete tour days hosted and guided by a Girona based professional cyclist
  • Dinners with a professional cyclist at their favourite, most reputed local restaurants
  • Tips, advice and insider knowledge from your pro cycling guide

Day 2

The famous Coast loop!

November 15, 2019 / Difficulty
/ Distance 110km

Enjoy a good breakfast this morning to fuel accordingly for a big day in the saddle! Today, we will be ‘coast bound’, tackling one of Girona’s most popular, must-do rides – the ‘Coast loop’. To add, you’ll be joined and guided in style by a pro cyclist.

Girona is now famously home to many pro riders and teams alike, predominantly due to its exceptional training grounds. Today, your pro guide will be showing you their favourite training loop, so be sure to get quizzing on any questions you may have, insights you’d enjoy learning and more. Most importantly – enjoy the ride and tuck in where you can!

We will head out on quiet, rolling roads to warm up ahead of the scenic Sant Grau climb (8.6km) – lengthy, but manageable and with an exceptional descent onto the Costa Brava coast road, where you will enjoy one of the most incredible stretches of road by bike, known for its roller coaster, rolling terrain and truly surreal views. We will make a pitstop at the gorgeous coastal town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols for a light lunch and coffee, before returning inland via another climb, Romanyá de la Selva and back to Girona via quiet, undulating roads.

On return to the hotel, our local masseur will be awaiting your arrival to treat you to a much needed recovery massage – just enough to ensure the legs are prep’d for another solid day on the radar tomorrow…

Take some time to then relax and freshen up before we regather for a group dinner downtown, joined by your pro cycling guide. Tonight, we’ll be refuelling well with traditional paella and undeniably, the best in town! This will also mark a fantastic opportunity to chat further with your pro guide, and gather a deeper understanding and insight into life as a professional cyclist.

Concluding dinner, if you have the energy, take some time to explore the beautiful, lively Girona by night, packed with evening atmosphere and offering a selection of great bars.

Day 3

Sant Hilari Sacalm

November 16, 2019 / Difficulty
/ Distance 110km

Following breakfast, get set for another big day of clicking k’s!

This morning, you’ll be joined again by your pro tour host, who may even be able to pull some strings and bring a friend or two from the peloton to join us for kick-off and a pre-ride brew.

Today, we’ll be setting out along stunning rolling, quiet roads. Take this time to ‘warm-up’ and enjoy the flatter land, as our target for today looms…the 25km ascent of Sant Hilari Sacalm, including 1,130 m of climbing!

The length may sound a little daunting, however the gentle gradient will ensure distance is soon forgotten as you set off from the base. The tree-sheltered climb is incredibly beautiful, offering another perfect distraction to move your focus and thoughts onto the surroundings.

Concluding a valiant effort to its peak, we will regroup atop at the town of Sant Hilari Sacalm at our favourite local café for a coffee break and/or light bite if you so desire…we must say that they’re most famous for their incredibly fresh, generously sized bocadillos (sandwiches)!

Following lunch, we will enjoy the spectacular hair-pin descent down the other side, before returning back to Girona via mostly flat terrain.

On return, take the afternoon to relax and/or explore Girona – perhaps a gelato at the famous ‘Rocambolesc’ will be welcomed following a big day out on the bike…

This evening, we will enjoy our final group dinner together alongside your pro cycling host at one of his favourite local restaurants. Cheers to what we expect has been a memorable weekend in Girona, with one ride still to come!

Day 4

Els Àngels/Santa Pellaia loop - One last hurrah!

November 17, 2019 / Difficulty
/ Distance 62km

This morning, we will set out earlier to allow time for our final ride, ahead of checkout and transfers.

To ensure you get enough climbing in, we’ll be hitting local favourite, and the closest climb to Girona’s centre, Els Àngels. The 10km ascent is just 3km from town, and its fairly gentle gradient guarantees a ‘mostly enjoyable’ ride to its summit, offering stunning views to ensure all that hard work was well worth the effort!

From there, we will descend down the other side and depending on time, we will have several ride options; a shorter loop back to Girona via surrounding local roads (40km total), or the ‘Hincapie’ loop, a 62km loop (total) that will include riding through the picturesque medieval village of Monells, before returning back to Girona via the 6km, Santa Pellaia gradual climb. This loop was made famous by pro cyclist, George Hincapie and as one of the very first pro riders to make Girona his home, it’s no surprise that the name has stuck!

On return, it’ll be time to freshen up, check-out and pack bikes before we transfer you to Barcelona airport early afternoon to say our goodbyes. We hope you’ve enjoyed your long weekend in Girona with Mummu Cycling + friends of the pro peloton, and hope to have you back with us again on future tours.

Adéu or adiós…Until next time!
